19-day trip along the highlights of South Africa
South Africa has many highlights. The journey takes you through beautiful landscapes, along the coast, the famous garden route and to the wine region.
Travel with comfortable accommodations from € 1800 pp. Based on 19 days with a group of 2 people. Price including car rental, accommodation including breakfast and some excursions; excluding flight.
You start this journey in Johannesburg where you will arrive at OR Tambo International Airport. Johannesburg is a major city in the history of South Africa and is today an important business center. Depending on your flight, you may have the afternoon for an excursion. Visit the impressive Apartheid Museum or go with a local through Soweto, one of the most famous townships in South Africa. If you arrive at the end of the day, consider an extra day in Johannesburg to be able to book an excursion.
After Johannesburg you drive eastwards to spend the night near Graskop. You will go to the Panorama route where you will see God’s Window Bourkes potholes and the Drie Rondavels, also take the time to stop at one of the waterfalls. Then the real fun will start .. You start looking for the Big 5 in Kruger NP! Because the animals are not very active during the day, you make the game drives in the morning and at the end of the day. Your game drive is included and is accompanied by an experienced ranger, in this way you can fully enjoy the surroundings and can keep your camera and / or binoculars ready. We will arrange a varied program for you of a bush walk and morning and afternoon game drives.
Hopefully you spotted a lot of special animals before you leave the park and travel south. You hereby discover a new part of the country. You drive along the border with Swaziland (eSwatini), which is a separate state from South Africa. You will notice that life is more primitive than you have seen on your way between Johannesburg and Graskop. You stay in Ermelo, an industrial town because of the coal mines. If you arrive on time you can visit the Boer War Memorial, the village was almost completely destroyed in the Boer War and then rebuilt. Or you can view wall paintings of the Bushmen who used to live here.
From there you continue on to St. Lucia, a very beautiful wetland area that is situated between the dunes. A special natural phenomenon with a lot of wild life. St. Lucia is also a nice place where you can walk around. Maybe someone also tells you the story about the hippos that often walk around in the streets, visit swimming pools or are hit by cars on the street. If you have enough time, it is nice to drive to Cape Vidal. We will also book a boat trip in the wetland park for you. Keep your eyes open to spot animals such as hippos, crocodiles and the many species of birds. Do you want something else? You can also canoe in the wetland park, snorkel at Cape Vidal, go for whale watching (June – November) or make a game drive along the river banks in either the wetland area or at the oldest game park in South Africa Hluhluwe.
After all these impressive highlights, it is time for some old-fashioned relaxing! Umlangha rocks is a big city where you can go shopping or have an extensive lunch and / or dinner. You mainly visit Umhlanga to enjoy the beautiful coastline. Aren’t you such a beach person? Then drive inland to view the valley of a 1000 hills. From Umlangha rocks you drive to Durban to hand in your car and take a domestic flight to Port Elizabeth. Off to the Western Cape!
Before you discover the natural beauty and culture of the Western Cape, you go on another safari in Addo elephant park. Going on Safari is actually something you’ll never get bored of, so enjoy this beautiful park to the fullest! The park is of course known for its large herd of elephants, but there are many more animals to find!
There is some debate about the precise start and end point of the Garden route, but you will certainly drive this route. It is a beautiful route with many highlights, almost too many to choose from. In the final travel description I will provide you with some extra tips so that you can decide where you want to spend some extra time. You will also stay in Swellendam, a town that clearly owes its history to the colonial past in which our Dutch ancestors were based in this town.
Now it is time for wine, lots of wine! Stellenbosch is the wine mecca of South Africa. Wineries can be found throughout the area and most wineries you can do a tasting for a nice price. Decide what wineries you prefer to visit because unfortunately you cannot visit them all. Do you want to combine wine with some activity? Then take a walk on the estate of La Motte or go for a bike & wine tour.
Fortunately, a highlight has also been preserved at the end of your journey, namely the beautiful city of Cape Town. While cities sometimes can be somewhat chaotic and busy, Cape Town is not. The location on the sea and the size of the city ensures that there is always a relaxed atmosphere. Enough activities here! Too many to choose from. What you should definitely not miss is the ride along Chapmans peak, the penguins at boulders beach, climbing Lions head and going up Table Mountain, Robben Island and the Kirstenbosch botanical gardens.
